Made in England by Italians

This is a segment of an art piece I made for 'Fathers and Daughters, man-made landscapes that are inhabited by a daughter's playful interventions, Spud from 6 - 18 July'. Artists Matt Smith and Martha Broadbent Smith created and curated this wonderful exhibition and invited friends and family to submit a piece of work. I made mine out of smashed tiles in homage to my dad who was a tiler. Here is the wording that went with the piece:

"Me and my dad (Vincenzo Barzotti) were 'monkeys' according to the Chinese Zodiac. We were playful and prone to melancholic moods. My dad would take us kids to the pub instead of church. It was very relaxing. We had something alike in our souls. But he had to work harder for material things as he was born poor in an Italian village. After getting fed up with herding goats, he left the village at 16 and was a miner in France and Belgium. Then he went to the UK and was a silver service waiter. Then he learned the trade of tiling and was a self employed tiler. My dad died at 10am on 21.12.17. The year I got married to Pete. I didn't get to the hospital until 2pm so I didn't get to say goodbye. I created this artwork as a way of reconnecting with the memories and love of my dad and roll with the mixed emotions I have about not saying goodbye to someone who was so important to me and in my life for so long.

Below is a piece of video art I have just made using this art piece as a starting point. My aim is to gradually create a series of art works and video art under the title of 'Made in England by Italians.'
